Vanessa Redgrave is to receive this year's Gielgud Award for Excellence in the Dramatic Arts at the U.K. Theatre Awards 2016, presented October 9 at London's Guildhall.
Redgrave has starred in more than 35 productions in London's West End and on Broadway, winning Olivier and Tony Awards for her stage work. On screen she has appeared in more than 80 films and is a six-time Oscar nominee, winning the Oscar in 1977 for her role in Julia. She was most recently seen on the London stage as Queen Margaret in the Almeida production of Richard III, opposite Ralph Fiennes.
The Gielgud Award for Excellence in the Dramatic Arts was established by The Shakespeare Guild in 1994. Previous recipients include F. Murray Abraham, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Derek Jacobi, Kevin Kline, Christopher Plummer, Lynn Redgrave OBE and Sir Patrick Stewart. Last year’s honor was bestowed on Dame Eileen Atkins.
