Printed annually in American Theatre magazine, the list is compiled from shows that played at TCG's member theatres. The list omits productions of holiday-themed shows, including A Christmas Carol and The Santaland Diaries as well as works by Shakespeare, who, according to TCG, "would have won by a landslide with 77 plays produced this year."

A single musical found its way onto the list this season, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods, which took the ninth slot with six productions. Typically newer musicals, such as Next to Normal or Spring Awakening, find a slot on the list in the first years of licensing availability.

Into the Woods, which is a popular licensing title, is seeing a resurgence this year with the upcoming Disney film adaptation. It is the first time the Tony Award-winning 1987 musical has made TCG's top ten most-produced list. TCG also announced that Sondheim is the most-produced composer in the U.S., with 20 productions this season.

For the first time, American Theatre Magazine also published a list of the 20 most-produced playwrights for the 2014-15 season.
