Green's widow, Phyllis Newman, who created the annual benefit, previously broke the news of the special tribute when she blogged for Playbill.com in April: "This year we're doing a very special [Dame with the theme] A Party for Comden and Green.....with many of the original players from their shows and revivals, etc. re-creating their songs and talking about their experiences. We'll mix media....and have an evening full of surprises and entertainment."

In their six-decade long collaboration, Comden and Green penned such musicals as On the Town, Wonderful Town, Do Re Mi, Subways Are for Sleeping, Bells are Ringing, Hallelujah, Baby!, Applause, Lorelei, On the Twentieth Century and The Will Rogers Follies, in addition to the screenplays for "On the Town," "The Band Wagon," "Auntie Mame "and "Singin’ in the Rain."
