No more guessing, no more secrets. At a press conference at the Theater an der Wien, the cast for the Viennese production of Chicago was announced on May 25. The roles of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly will be played by newcomers.
Frederike Haas, cast as Roxie, has played roles in Singin´ in the Rain (Dresden), Anything Goes (Berlin) and currently City of Angels (Krefeld). Anna Montanaro, who confessed not knowing too much about her role ("I only saw the second act in London"), has toured Europe as Rumpleteazer in Cats and is currently starring as Sandy in Grease! (Duesseldorf).
Billy Flynn will be played by Rainhard Fendrich, one of Austria’s most popular singers. Fendrich has enchanted German television audiences, hosting a local version of "The Dating Game" for four years. "I have seen the show in the West End some months ago and knew this role was for me," Fendrich commented on his return to stage musicals after a 16-year absence.
Like Fendrich, Isabel Weicken appeared in the last Viennese production of Chicago in 1980. However, she’s found a new place in the Cook County Jail´s hierarchy, switching from Velma Kelly to Mama Morton.
Dutch-born Leon van Leeuwenberg, a former Emperor Franz Joseph in the hit musical Elisabeth, returns to the Theater an der Wien as Amos Hart. Rehearsals will begin at the end of July, with Ann Reinking as choreographer and Walter Bobbie at the helm. Caspar Richter is the musical director.
Chicago will run at the Theater an der Wien from Sept. 23 to Jan. 6 and then will transfer to the Ronacher-Theater for a three-month run before going to Switzerland and Germany.
