Classic Arts News Vienna Philharmonic Named WHO Ambassador The Vienna Philharmonic was named Goodwill Ambassador for the World Health Organization at the World Health Assembly in Geneva yesterday.
During its five-year term as ambassador, the Philharmonic will dedicate performances to the WHO, give benefit concerts for the organization, and "generally promot[e] the WHO's good works."

The orchestra began its relationship with the WHO when it donated 100,000 euros of the proceeds from its famous New Year's Day Concert to the organization in order to provide safe drinking water for victims of the 2004 Asian tsunami.

The VPO's other charitable activities include annual New York concerts to benefit the American-Austrian Foundation's medical seminars and annual donations to various groups from the proceeds of the New Year's Day Concert.
