Classic Arts Features Villaz‹n Requires Surgery; Tenor Likely Out for Most of the Year Rolando Villaz‹n "needs surgery as soon as possible" to remove a cyst on his vocal cords. He has canceled many upcoming performances and may not return to the stage for the rest of 2009.

The star tenor recently withdrew from performances in the Met's production of L'Elisir d'Amore with an acute case of laryngitis.

He thus far has canceled several upcoming concerts set for Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris and Hamburg; spring and summer performances of Massenet's Werther in Vienna, Baden-Baden and Munich; a concert performance of Handel arias at the Salzburg Festival; and a June concert with Antonio Pappano at the Royal Opera House.

It was announced late April 29 that he has officially withdrawn from the title role in the Metropolitan Opera's new production of Les Contes d'Hoffmann, scheduled for Dec. 3, 2009 through Jan. 2, 2010.

A statement from Universal Music Classical Management and Productions said that Mr. Villaz‹n's doctor expected him back on stage "around the end of the year."
