Ford Motor Company's 50th anniversary was the occasion for the union of Martin and Merman, who offered a 13-minute duet featuring the songs that made them famous. The women also performed individually on the program: Merman sang "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and "Mademoiselle from Armetières" while Martin offered a comic routine about the changes in fashion history. The original airing of the Ford television show attracted 60 million viewers; Decca subsequently released an LP of the Merman-Martin performance, which sold over 100,000 in two days on the shelves. Ethel Merman was the original star of such Broadway musicals as Call Me Madam, Annie Get Your Gun, Anything Goes and Gypsy. Martin's numerous stage credits include Leave It to Me!, One Touch of Venus, South Pacific, Peter Pan, The Sound of Music and I Do! I Do!
The 27-minute recording, "Mary Martin and Ethel Merman," with a retail price of $19.95, is being released by Video Artists International. Visit www.vaimusic.com for more information.
