Playwright Clifford Odets rose to prominence as part of the Group Theatre, a collaborative creative effort that included future luminaries Stella Adler, Elia Kazan, Sanford Meisner and Lee Strasberg. With the Group Theatre, Odets premiered his plays Awake and Sing!, Waiting for Lefty, and finally Golden Boy, which would prove to be the company's biggest hit.
This vintage Playbill from February 1938 features original cast members Luther Adler as the title boxer, Frances Farmer as Lorna Moon and Lee J. Cobb as the neighbor Mr. Carp. At this point in the run, Sanford Meisner replaced Elia Kazan as the flamboyant gangster Eddie Fuseli.
