Von Trapp Family Member Responds to Lady Gaga's "Sound of Music" Performance | Playbill

News Von Trapp Family Member Responds to Lady Gaga's "Sound of Music" Performance Elisabeth von Trapp, granddaughter of Maria von Trapp, expressed her feelings about Lady Gaga's performance of songs from The Sound of Music at the Oscar's earlier this week.

In a piece penned for the Independent, von Trapp, whose late father was Werner (renamed Kurt in the Rodgers and Hammerstein film adaptation), wrote about her personal connection to the musical. At a young age she appeared as a nun in a production of The Sound of Music and has since gone on to portray her grandmother, Maria, in other stagings.

In addition to singling out Julie Andrews for "her beautiful portrayal of my grandmother," she added, "I must say that I thought Lady Gaga's celebration at the Oscars was exquisite – her voice being perfect for the medley – and beautifully choreographed. Her rendition once again highlighted the beauty and timelessness of Rodgers and Hammerstein's masterpiece: The Sound of Music."

Last year, members of the von Trapp family went public with their feelings about Grammy Award winner Carrie Underwood's performance in the live broadcast of The Sound of Music on NBC.
