Classic Arts News Washington National Opera May Travel to Finland in 2007 The Washington National Opera may travel to Finland's Savonlinna Opera Festival in 2007, the Helsingin Sanomat reports.
Christina Scheppelman, WNO's director of artistic operations, told the paper that general director Plšcido Domingo would like to bring Wagner's Die Walk‹re and one American opera—either Carlisle Floyd's Of Mice and Men or Nicholas Maw's Sophie's Choice—to the festival.

Domingo would likely conduct the production of Die Walk‹re, rather than sing in it. "He cannot know whether he would be vocally fit to perform [Siegmund] in 2007," Scheppelman said.

Officials from the WNO and the festival both said that the appearance was likely to go forward, but that financial details still needed to be worked out. "There is no contract yet, and at the end of the day it all comes down to money," WNO president Michael Sonnenreich said.
