Commercially unsuccessful on Broadway, Wendy Wasserstein's darkly comic look at politics and media, An American Daughter, gets another chance -- ironically enough, thanks to television. A TV movie version of the comedy-drama airs on the Lifetime cable network, 9-11 PM, June 5. Christine Lahti stars as a D.C. doctor recently nominated for the post of Surgeon General. She seems a natural for the job until she makes a seemingly harmless remark about "ice box cakes" on a television news show, and the fury of insulted Midwestern housewives comes raining down on her head. The resulting media frenzy leaves her disillusioned, with her relationship to her father, husband (Tom Skerritt) and friends in tatters. Also in the cast is Lynne Thigpen, who won a Tony for her performance in the 1997 Broadway premiere. Other castmembers include Stanley Anderson, Jay Thomas, Mark Feuerstein and Blake Lindsley.

Kate Nelligan created the lead role on Broadway, alongside Hal Holbrook, Bruce Norris, Elizabeth Marvel, Cotter Smith and Peter Riegert.
