The minds behind Avenue Q—and its puppets—found their purpose when the musical premiered in 2003, going on to win the Tony Award for Best Musical.

5 years later, the show (now Off-Broadway) is set to play its final performance, so puppet creator Rick Lyon and puppeteer Jason Jacoby (as Nicky) dropped by New York NBC 4 studios to discuss the musical’s lasting power, the messages behind the show, and how the puppets recently ended up in the Smithsonian Museum.

Watch the video below as the pair speaks with Gus Rosendale about why it isn't goodbye forever, just so long—for now.

Avenue Q will take its final bow at New World Stages May 26.
