The story of The Prom begins on opening night of the fictional Eleanor! The Musical, starring Dee Dee Allen and Barry Glickman (Brooks Ashmanskas). But when the reviews come in criticizing the two for their narcissistic ways, they decide to rehab their images by taking up a cause and becoming celebrity activists. They trek to Indiana to defend the cause of a young high-schooler banned from her prom for wanting to take her girlfriend.

Later in the second act, Leavel’s commitment to the cause is tested, despite her more self-centered nature. Watch Leavel belt out “The Lady’s Improving” (an apt anthem from one of Dee Dee's earlier shows) above.
