There’s a new musical theatre anthem sweeping the nation—written by Tony and Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land). “This Is Me,” written for original movie musical The Greatest Showman, has been lighting up the Billboard charts; taken home a Golden Globe; and is nominated for an Oscar. The film's star—who sang the song in the movie—Keala Settle stopped by The Ellen Show February 21 to perform it.
Prior to the movie’s December 20 premiere, Settle spoke to Playbill about what it feels like to sing the song with a clear message of empowerment:
Settle made her Broadway debut in Priscilla Queen of the Desert before originating the role of Norma Valverde in Hands on a Hardbody, for which she earned a 2013 Tony nomination. She went on to play the role of Madame Thénardier in the 2014 revival of Les Misérables, and originated the role of Becky in Sara Bareilles’ Waitress. The Greatest Showman marks Settle’s big screen breakout as she plays Lettie Lutz, “the Bearded Lady,” in the film about the beginnings of P.T. Barnum’s circus. The film also stars Tony winner Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya, Michelle Williams, and more, and is directed by Michael Gracey.
Tune in to the 90th Oscars Sunday, March 4 8PM ET on ABC.
