Each year, Off-Broadway theatre company MCC Theater hosts its Miscast gala. In the vein of creating unconventional theatre and supporting daring new voices, Miscast features performances by the greatest talents in New York theatre singing songs from roles in which they would otherwise be “miscast.”
This year, as MCC celebrated its 30th anniversary, the gala featured performances by Jordan Fisher, Jenn Colella, Mandy Gonzalez, Ben Platt, Tony Award nominees Stephanie J. Block, Brian d’Arcy James, Carmen Cusack, and Brandon Victor Dixon, and Tony winners, Norbert Leo Butz, Jennifer Holliday, and Kelli O’Hara.
Currently starring in the smash hit musical from Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Dear Evan Hansen, Platt took the stage to sing “The Man That Got Away” from A Star Is Born. “I spent a good part of my childhood dressed as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. I have always had a real fascination with Judy Garland and just worshipped her,” said Platt of the legendary performer before singing the touching ballad.
