Watch: Lady Gaga Meets Rent in This Epic Mashup

The latest music video from the makers of #HAM4BEY.

From the minds that brought us #HAM4BEY comes the latest pop/musical theatre mashup: #GAGA4RENT.

Creator Michael Korte and arranger Jared Jenkins fused the songs of Rent with Lady Gaga (who will perform at Sunday’s Super Bowl LI Halftime Show). The video opens with the title song from Jonathan Larson’s Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical and includes nods to “Light My Candle,” “Today 4 U,” “Life Support,” “Over the Moon,” “La Vie Boheme,” and more mixed with Gaga tunes like “Alejandro,” “Born This Way,” and “Paparazzi.”

Korte began mashing musicals and pop stars with #HAM4BEY. “The inspiration really came from Lin-Manuel [Miranda],” says Korte. “When I first heard the Hamilton soundtrack, I was overcome by its stunning and relatable pop/hip-hop melodies. Somewhere in my mind I knew there must be an opportunity to mash or combine and mold or reconfigure his work with current pop hits.

“On a personal note, I’m an eclectic sweet mess of a music fanatic,” continues Korte. “For every Cynthia Erivo track I have on repeat, it's usually followed by some Chance The Rapper and then Dixie Chicks.”

Still, matching mainstream artists with musicals can be a challenge. “Hamilton and Beyoncé was a natural fusion. Rent and Gaga almost didn’t happen,” says Korte. “All props go to the wildly talented Jared Jenkins for his inspiring arrangement!”

Korte and team have more videos planned to merge the sounds of stage and radio. “I can’t reveal much,” says Korte, “but we will most likely either go ‘green’ or go ‘purple’!” Elphaba? Celie? Whoever it is, we’re here for it.
