Classic Arts News Watch Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti From Opera North The staging of Bernstein's first opera premiered in Leeds in 2017.

England’s Leeds-based Opera North has posted its entire production of Leonard Bernstein’s 1952 opera Trouble in Tahiti on YouTube—check it out above.

The acclaimed 50-minute production, directed by Matthew Eberhardt and starring Quirijn de Lang and Wallis Giunta, premiered in October 2017 in as part of the copmany's "The Little Greats" series of short operas.

Trouble in Tahiti is set in 1950s suburbia and focuses on a young married couple, Sam and Dinah, struggling to make their marriage work. The opera’s score incorporates a variety of American musical styles, including jazz and swing.

The one-act piece was Bernstein’s first opera, with both music and libretto by the legendary composer and conductor. His centenary is being celebrated this year worldwide, with concerts and productions of his works, which include West Side Story, Candide, and On the Town.
