Following its grand opening in 2006, the Watermill Center has announced it is now ready to open its residency program to artists and creators working in various mediums. Proposals for the fall 2008 and spring 2009 Watermill residencies may last anywhere from one to four weeks.

The Watermill Center residencies offer young experimental artists a one-of-a-kind creative laboratory through cross-disciplinary exploration, apprenticeships with master artists, and creative exchange. The Watermill Center supports new work in all artistic disciplines, with a primary focus on inspiring a new generation of artists.

Applicants for the Watermill Center residencies "should have a specific project on which they would like to work, where the aesthetics and mission, as well as the physical plant of the Center would support and further their goals," according to the Watermill Center website.

In addition, the residency program requires that each of its artists participate in the Center's outreach program, either through master classes, open rehearsals, or a workshop for local schools.

Former artists who have participated in the Watermill programs include Trisha Brown, David Byrne, Lucinda Childs, Philip Glass, Isabelle Huppert, Jeanne Moreau, Lou Reed, Miranda Richardson, Dominique Sanda and Susan Sontag. Submitted projects are evaluated and selected by a prestigious committee consisting of eight people from diverse backgrounds — including visual arts, performing arts, education/social sciences/sciences/politics, business/administration, journalism/literature, music/opera, film and entertainment — in addition to Robert Wilson and the Watermill Center creative director.
