HRH, playwright Snoo Wilsons latest, which is currently on at the Playhouse Theatre in the West End, has posted closing notices for 20 December. Opened 9 October, the play was originally scheduled to book until 31 January 1998. Simon Callow, biographer and actor well-known for his camp film role in Four Weddings and a Funeral, directs the two-hander which examines the private lives of the former King Edward (played by Corin Redgrave) and his divorcee wife Mrs. Wallis Simpson (played by Amanda Donohoe best know for her role in LA Law) for whom he abdicated the throne of England. The action of the play takes place after the abdication during Edwards governorship of the Bahamas in the early 1940s.
HRH follows the fate of Always, a romantic musical depicting the affair of Edward and Wallis Simpson, which closed this summer after only six weeks in the West End.
