New York Theatre Workshop has added an additional week of performances for What the Constitution Means to Me, written and performed by two-time Obie Award-winning playwright and actor Heidi Schreck.
The production, which is set to officially open September 30, will now continue through October 28.
What the Constitution Means to Me is directed by Oliver Butler and is inspired by Schreck's own life, family history, and the U.S. Constitution.
Fifteen-year-old Schreck put herself through college by giving speeches about the U.S. Constitution. In her play, she traces the effects of this founding document on generations of women, including many in her family—starting with her great-great-grandmother, a mail-order bride from Germany who died of melancholia.
Schreck is joined onstage at New York Theatre Workshop by Mike Iveson and New York City high school students Rosdely Ciprian and Thursday Williams.
The production, which began previews September 12, follows an acclaimed debut at Clubbed Thumb’s Summerworks Festival in 2017. What the Constitution Means to Me was commissioned by True Love Productions. For more information visit NYTW.org.
