Barrington Stage Company has added two performances to the run of its New England premiere of The Whipping Man, Matthew Lopez's play about a Jewish confederate soldier and his former slaves, who are also Jewish. Previews begin May 26 at BSC's Stage 2 in Pittsfield, MA.

Clarke Peters (HBO's "Treme" and "The Wire"), LeRoy McClain (Broadway's The History Boys, Cymbeline) and Nick Westrate (Off-Broadway's recent The Boys in the Band) are featured in the post-Civil War drama. The added shows are 3 PM May 30 and June 6.

BSC regular Christopher Innvar, best known as an actor, directs The Whipping Man. Opening is May 29. Performances play to June 13.

Here's how BSC bills the play, which is gaining popularity in regional theatres: "At the end of the Civil War, Caleb DeLeon (Nick Westrate) a severely wounded Jewish Confederate officer returns to his family's home in Richmond, VA. The house is in ruins and has been abandoned except for two newly freed slaves, Simon and John (Clarke Peters and LeRoy McClain), reared in the Jewish faith by the soldier's family. As they await the family's return, the three men share a Passover Seder where deeply buried secrets are revealed that threaten to destroy their shared faith, their new found freedom and their hope for the future."

Lopez's Tio Pepe was seen in the 2008 Summer Play Festival at The Public Theater. His other plays include Zoey's Perfect Wedding and Reverberation. The Whipping Man premiered at Luna Stage in Montclair, NJ, and has received productions at Penumbra Theatre Company in St. Paul, Caldwell Theatre in Boca Raton, FL, and the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego.

The creative team includes Sandra Goldmark (scenic design), Kristina Lucka (costume design), Scott Pinkney (lighting design), Brad Berridge (sound design) and Kate Cudworth (stage manager). Visit www.barringtonstageco.org or call (413) 236-8888 or visit the box office.
