On Oct. 23, stage and screen actress Whoopi Goldberg will play a one-night-only concert at New York's Carnegie Hall. All proceeds of the gig, which is presented by Mike Nichols, will benefit the non-profit organization "Friends In Deed," which provides emotional, spiritual and psychological support to those affected by life-threatening illness.
According to Joseph Werzinski, manager of Friends In Deed, Goldberg will be recreating the one-woman Broadway show that brought her to national prominence in 1984. Mike Nichols presented that staging as well, which ran for 150 performances at Broadway's Lyceum Theatre.
Friends In Deed's previous fund-raisers have included the reuniting of Mike Nichols with his comedy partner, Elaine May; the movie premiere of Birdcage (the American film based on La Cage Aux Folles), and the 10th Anniversary special performance of Sondheim's Sunday In The Park With George.
Tickets for Whoopi At Carnegie Hall are handled by both Carnegie Charge and Friends In Deed, which handles the premium seats ($1,000 gets you both a ticket and an invitation to the post-show party.
