News Wicked and War of the Roses Take Top Honors at Australia's Helpmann Awards The Melbourne production of the Stephen Schwartz musical Wicked earned six of Australia's Helpmann Awards, including Best Musical, on July 27.

Wicked took home honors for Best Direction of a Musical (Lisa Leguillou), Best Choreography (Wayne Cilento), Best Costume Design (Susan Hilferty), Best Scenic Design (Eugene Lee) and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Rob Guest).

In addition to Wicked, the Helpmann Awards also honored Sydney Theatre Company's sprawling presentation of Shakespeare's eight history plays, The War of the Roses, with six award honors including Best Play.

STC's War of the Roses, which featured Cate Blanchett as Richard II, was also awarded Best Direction (Benedict Andrews), Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Ewen Leslie), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Marta Dusseldorp), Best Lighting Design (Nich Schlieper), Best Sound Design (Max Lyandvert).

Best Actor in a Play went to Ben Winspear (Baghdad Wedding), Best Actress in a Play for Robyn Nevin (Women of Troy), Best Actor in a Musical to Billie Brown (Spamalot), Best Actress in a Musical to Sharon Milllerchip (Chicago) and Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical to Nancye Hayes (My Fair Lady).

Eddie Perfect's Shane Warne The Musical earned Best New Australian Work, Opera Australia's Billy Budd was awarded Best Opera and Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps earned Best Regional Touring Production. For a full list of Helpmann Award winners visit HelpmannAwards.
