Wicked Tops 2006 Broadway Grosses, Followed by Lion King, Jersey Boys, Color Purple, Spamalot

News   Wicked Tops 2006 Broadway Grosses, Followed by Lion King, Jersey Boys, Color Purple, Spamalot Wicked was by far the top-grossing show on Broadway in 2006 with $73.1 million, according to figures supplied by the League of American Theatres and Producers.

The Gershwin Theatre musical was followed by Lion King ($58.3 million), Jersey Boys ($55.0 million), The Color Purple ($51.6 million) and Spamalot ($51.0 million). Rounding out the top ten were Mamma Mia! ($48.8 million), The Phantom of the Opera ($39.5 million), Beauty and the Beast ($34.1 million), The Drowsy Chaperone ($33.7 million) and The Producers ($33.4 million).

The top play was The Odd Couple ($17.7 million), followed by The History Boys ($16.8 million).

Wicked's total gives it an average of $1.4 million every week.

The Drowsy Chaperone, which began previews April 3, was the top-grossing show that began in 2006.

The top show that closed in 2006 was Dirty Rotten Scoundrels ($20.6 million), which ended Sept. 3. The top show to both open and close in 2006 was The Wedding Singer ($20 million), which began previews March 30 and closed Dec. 31. The full list of grosses in 2006 is as follows:
