The 54th annual honors will be presented at a ceremony at Sardi's Restaurant, May 27. The awards, known as the first awards of the season, are decided upon by an group of writers "covering New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers, national publications and other media beyond Broadway."

In several tight races, ties were declared in the categories of Off-Broadway Musical (Johnny Guitar and The Thing about Men) and Featured Actor in a Musical (John Cariani and Michael Cerveris). As previously reported, the Broadway production of Prymate will be considered for next season's awards as the nominating committee were not able to see the show prior to the eligibility cut-off date. Golda's Balcony and Avenue Q were deemed ineligible as they were considered for last year's Off-Broadway awards.
