News Wicked's Menzel Up for Lead in London Evita With casting currently ongoing for the Really Useful Group's new production of Evita — set to open sometime in 2006 — a few names have emerged in the press. The Daily Mail newspaper reports that Tony Award winner Idina Menzel, who starred in Wicked and Rent on Broadway, is in the running for the title role.

As for Evita's husband Juan Peron, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber is apparently auditioning actors including Roger Allam, Douglas Hodge and Philip Quast. All three have substantial musical experience. Allam was the first London Javert in Les Misérables and Hodge is currently arranging crap games as Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls. Quast is the most experienced of them all — as well as being one of Allam's successors as Javert (which he also recorded, for the complete symphonic edition), he has starred in such musicals as A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum, South Pacific (both at the National Theatre) and The Secret Garden. The show will be directed by Michael Grandage, designed by Christopher Oram and choreographed by Rob Ashford. That's the same team behind the Hodge-starring Guys and Dolls.
