Hollywood star Willem Dafoe is to join the long list of American movie stars acting in stage plays in London.
He will be appearing in To You, The Birdie at the Riverside studios from May 9 to May 23 as part of LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre).
To You, The Birdie is an interesting piece of programming, given that it is based on Racine's play Phaedre, which was staged at the Riverside Studios — in a production starring Shelia Gish as the doomed Queen Phaedra — earlier this year.
The production was not rated a great success, but To You, The Birdie is performed by the radical American group The Wooster Group, who in the early 1990's were seen in London in a version (with a similarly exclamatory title, Brace Up!) of another European classic, Chekhov's The Three Sisters.
