Wisconsin’s La Cross Community Theatre will be the first community theatre to stage Billy Elliot, according to the La Cross Tribune. Performances kick off May 13 for an engagement set to run through May 29.

Billy Elliot is right up there with Mary Poppins in difficulty,” director Greg Parmeter told the Tribune. Parmeter is also LCT’s artistic director. “At one point, I wondered, ‘Wow, will we be ready?’” he continued. “But last week, everything really solidified. The cast has responded very well. It’s a fun, hardworking group.”

The 2008 Broadway production of Billy Elliot won Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Direction and Best Actor in a Musical. The show ended its lengthy run January 8, 2012.
