Classic Arts News With No Replacement for Muti, La Scala Orchestra Cancels U.K. Concerts The La Scala Philharmonic Orchestra has canceled a three-city tour in the U.K. because the orchestra has not found a replacement for music director Riccardo Muti, who resigned earlier this month.
The concerts, at the Royal Festival Hall in London, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, and Symphony Hall in Birmingham, would have taken place May 26-28. The program was to include works by Verdi, Elgar, Busoni, and Respighi.

Muti resigned after a protracted standoff with his musicians and the opera house's workers led to strikes and performance cancellations. La Scala's unions protested the firing of general manager Carlo Fontana, and his replacement with Mauro Meli, a Muti ally.

Meli has also since resigned, and was replaced with St_phane Lissner, who steps into the position next month.
