News Work Continues of Musical Version of Bullets Over Broadway Marvin Hamlisch told Variety July 17 that he and lyricist Craig Carnelia are continuing work on the stage musical version of the movie Bullets Over Broadway. At last report, Woody Allen was penning the libretto from the screenplay he wrote with Douglas McGrath.

At present, there is no timetable for the project or any scheduled debut production. No director is attached. The film was about an intellectual writer reluctantly bowing to commercial and producer pressure as he writes a play for Broadway. Martin Richards and Sam Crothers, aka Producer Circle, are the producing team on Bullets. Word of the project first surfaced in the summer of 2000.

Carnelia and Hamlisch collaborated on the recent Broadway musical Sweet Smell of Success, which was also based on a film.

In the movie "Bullets," Dianne Wiest won an Academy Award for her portrayal of a vain lush of a stage star who headlines a young playwright's new work. John Cusack played the idealistic dramatist and Chazz Palminteri was the mobster with a dramatic flair who ends up ghostwriting the play for Cusack. Also in the cast was Jennifer Tilly as a Mob moll who pays the ultimate price for being a bad actress.
