News World Premiere of Douglas Carter Beane's Fairy Cakes Will Open Scranton Shakespeare Tonight Fairy Cakes – a new play by five-time Tony nominee Douglas Carter Beane and with music by Lewis Flinn – will premiere at the Scranton Shakespeare Festival (Scranton, PA) tonight, July 25.

Directed by Beane and with choregraphy by Tony nominee Josh Rhodes (Cinderella), Fairy Cakes will run for two performances July 25-26 at 6:00 PM at the Royal Theatre at the University of Scranton's McDade Center for Literary and Performing Arts (500 Linden Street in Scranton, PA).

Also notably, Fairy Cakes will also have costumes by two time Tony nominee Gregory Gale; scenic and lighting design will be by Rich Larson.

According to press notes, "Fairy Cakes is written in rhymes and couplets and depicts what happens to Shakespeare's fairies when they are off stage in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Suffice it to say, they turn up as fairies in "Cinderella," "Pinnochio," "Sleeping Beauty" and as the ubiquitous tooth fairy. Not to be outdone by a bunch of fairies, Shakespeare's own Puck participates in the play's comic pursuits."

Tonight's premiere cast is Grant Chamberlin, Megan Stewart, Tamara Sevunts, Lauren Renahan, Billie Aken-Tyers, Gerome Samonte, Daniel Redfern, Jonathan J. Stephens , Pedro Almeida, Conor Ling, Tamara Ratcliffe, James Physick, Emmie Gelat, Katey Lewis and Michael Bradshaw Flynn.

Fairy Cakes will join Twelfth Night and Pirates of Penzance as part of Scranton Shakespeare Festival's third annual season.  Visit scrantonshakespearefestival.org for more information and tickets.
