SAN DIEGO -- Michael Hemmingson's Erotic Scenes in a Cheap Motel Room will have its world premiere at the Fritz Theatre Mar. 11.
Hemmingson, the Fritz's literary manager, is also a director (Sex Lives of Superheroes, now playing late night at the Fritz). Erotic Scenes is his fourth play to be produced at the Fritz. He describes it as a story dealing with "various couples, straight and gay, who rendezvous in a seedy motel on the outskirts of reality for sordid sex, hot talk and sad memories, all the while listening to the Art Bell radio show."
Erotic Scenes is the first installment of the Fritz Theatre's New Play Development Program.
Daniella Mayz is the director, and the cast includes Michael Kelly, Jyl Kaneshiro, Mark Mendes, Christine Doyle and Lissa Zappardino.
"We are constantly looking for good one-act scripts to present as late-night shows . . . The ideal late-night show has to be adaptable, cheap and suitable for the time slot -- that is, plays that are sexual and funny, or dark and dangerous, or a combination of all," said Hemmingson. "The theatres that present late-night material are generally located in the big cities -- San Diego, Los Angeles, Chicago and New York," he said. "They're a good market for writers who can write that way. Play publishers are taking note of that fact. They're beginning to publish late-night one-acters. One of mine, Beirut, is on the Broadway Play Publisher's top-10 list."
Hemmingson has also published three novels with small-press publishers, including The Naughty Yard and Minstrels.
The Mar. 11 performance is at 8 PM, with performances thereafter Fri. and Sat. at 10:15 PM at the Fritz Theatre, 420 Third Ave. For tickets, $10, call (619) 233-7505.
