Placebo is the new play from Obie Award winner Gibson and is directed by fellow Obie Award winner Daniel Aukin (The Fortress of Solitude). The two are longtime collaborators, both returning to Playwrights Horizons for the first time since their acclaimed production of This in 2009.
Placebo will run through April 5 with an official opening night set for March 16.
According to Playwrights Horizons, "A minty green pill – medication or sugar? Louise (Connolly) is working on a placebo-controlled study of a new female arousal drug. As her work in the lab navigates the blurry lines between perception and deception, more and more these same questions pertain to her life at home. With uncanny insight and unparalleled wit, Melissa James Gibson’s affectionate comedy examines slippery truths and the power of crossed fingers."
The production features scenic and costume designs by Tony Award nominee David Zinn, lighting design by Matt Frey and sound design by Ryan Rumery.
Gibson is an award-winning playwright whose work has been produced at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, Atlantic Theater Company, Soho Rep and La Jolla Playhouse, among others. She is the recipient of a Lucille Lortel Foundations Playwrights' Fellowship and Guggenheim Fellowship. She is also a writer and story editor for "House of Cards" on Netflix and the FX series "The Americans." Drama Desk nominee director Daniel Aukin's Off-Broadway credits include the Roundabout Theatre Company, the Atlantic Theater Company, Signature Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club and Lincoln Center, among others.
Tickets, priced $75, can be purchased via TicketCentral.com or by phone at (212) 2794-4200. Playwrights Horizons’ Mainstage Theater is located at 416 West 42nd Street, Manhattan.
