Young and Chinn Set for Wooster Group's La Didone at St. Ann's

News   Young and Chinn Set for Wooster Group's La Didone at St. Ann's Casting has been announced for the American premiere of the Wooster Group's adaptation of the Francesco Cavalli opera La Didone, which will arrive at St. Ann's Warehouse March 17.

Director Elizabeth LeCompte has combined Cavalli's baroque opera with visual elements from Mario Brava's 1965 sci-fi horror film "Terrore nello spazio" for the work, which received critical praise at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The St. Ann's production will run through April 26.

The cast features John Young, Hai-Ting Chinn, Ari Fliakos, Jennifer Griesbach, Hank Heijink, Andrew Nolen, Kamala Sankaram, Scott Shepherd, Harvey Valdes Kate Valk and Judson Williams.

"In the opera," press notes state, "Aeneas, prince of Troy (John Young), lands on the shores of Africa after a violent sea storm batters his ship. There, he falls in love with Dido, queen of Carthage (Hai-Ting Chinn), and becomes entangled in a web of love, deception, power and madness. Leaping forward in time, Mario Bava's 'Terrore nello spazio' depicts the crash of the spaceship Argos on the planet Aura, where its crew becomes locked in a desperate battle with zombies over the 'meteor rejector' that will enable their escape."

Music director Bruce Odland has incorporated electric guitar, keyboards and accordion into the baroque score of La Didone.

St. Ann's has hosted the Wooster Group productions of Hamlet, The Emperor Jones, House/Lights, Brace Up! and To You, the Birdie!. Tickets may be purchased by phoning (718) 254-8779 or online at St.Anns.
