PLAYBILL.COM'S CUE & A: Colman Domingo

By Ernio Hernandez
14 May 2008

Colman Domingo

Colman Domingo — who co-stars in the new Broadway musical Passing Strange — fills out Playbill.com's questionnaire with random facts, backstage trivia and pop culture tidbits.

Full given name: Colman Jason Domingo
Hometown: Philadelphia (where I grew up) and San Francisco (where I became an artist).
Special skills: Aerial Web and 5 ft. stilt-walking
First Broadway show ever saw: A Doll's House with Janet McTeer at the Belasco Theatre, where I am now making my debut. An Oprah "Aha moment!"
If you could go back in time and catch any Broadway show, what would it be? A Raisin in the Sun with Sidney Poitier and Ruby Dee.
Current show you have been recommending to friends: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with my dear friend Anika Noni Rose and August Osage County. Run don't walk is what I usually say.
Favorite show tune: "Home" from The Wiz. Always makes me cry.
MAC or PC? Absolutely MAC.
Most played song on your iPod: Amy Winehouse's version of "There is No Greater Love."
One CD you couldn't live without: Donny Hathaway's Greatest Hits.
Last book you read: "Ask and It Is Given" [by Esther and Jerry Hicks]
Must-see TV show: "Project Runway"
Last good movie you saw: "La Vie en Rose"
Favorite board game: Scattergories
Performer you would drop everything to go see: Ledisi
Pop culture guilty pleasure: VH1's "Rock of Love"
First stage kiss: Still haven't had a good one to write about.
Favorite pre-show meal: Usually something healthy from Le Pain Quotidien or Saju Bistro across the street from the Belasco.
How you got your Equity card: I got my Equity Card from Berkeley Rep when I was 22 years old. I was cast in David Saar's The Yellow Boat.
Worst missed cue: I missed my entrance in a production of Blade to the Heat at Thick Description in San Francisco. I came in to the scene very late and hugged the punching bag. I had no idea what to do! Unfortunately that mishap was recorded for archives at UC Berkeley. It goes down in history.
Who have you played on "Law & Order"? Which edition? I played Harvard Attorney Ron Gumer (unfortunate last name) on the flagship "Law & Order"; Gus a homeless, schizophrenic, heroin addict on "L&O: Trial by Jury"; and Sgt. Ev. Sides on "L&O: Criminal Intent."
Worst costume ever: In Bright Ideas at MCC I played a Hip Hop Beaver named Bix. A full mascot costume. It gets hot as hell in those things.
Favorite cereal: Raisin Bran Crunch.
Worst job you ever had: A waiter at a four-star restaurant in San Francisco. I would go to the bathroom and cry in the middle of a shift. Customers and staff join together to make sure you felt like a maniac.
TV or commercial gig you most enjoyed: When I was upgraded from an extra to PepsiMan in the PepsiMan 2000 Japan campaign. It was shot by the famed cinematographer Tak Fujimoto.
