PLAYBILL.COM'S CUE & A: Kelly Sullivan

By Ernio Hernandez
27 Aug 2008

Kelly Sullivan
Kelly Sullivan

Kelly Sullivan — who recently joined the cast of Broadway's Young Frankenstein — fills out Playbill.com's questionnaire with random facts, backstage trivia and pop culture tidbits.

Full given name: Kelly Sullivan
Hometown: Puyallup, Washington. Pronounced "pui," not "pew"
Audition song: I love singing "Somebody Somewhere" from The Most Happy Fella.
Special skills: Yodeling… who knew?
First Broadway show ever saw: The revival of Cabaret.
If you could go back in time and catch any Broadway show, what would it be? Gwen Verdon in anything she did.
Current show you have been recommending to friends: August: Osage County
Favorite show tune: The entire score of A Little Night Music.
Most played song on your iPod: I'm a shuffler.
One CD you couldn't live without: "A Charlie Brown Christmas" album
Last book you read: "The Pillars of the Earth" - Ken Follett
Favorite board game: Cranium, I haven't lost a game yet...
Performer you would drop everything to go see: Laura Linney
Pop culture guilty pleasure: "So You Think You Can Dance." I love it!!
First stage kiss: In high school, I did a community theater production of The Fantasticks, in Tacoma, Washington. I played Luisa and Matt was played by Michael Buchanan (who was just in Cry-Baby). xoxo Michael!
Favorite post-show meal: My favorite post-show splurge is frozen yogurt and mocha at Red Mango.
How you got your Equity card: My first Broadway show, Bells Are Ringing. I was 22 years old and had just arrived in New York City.
Worst onstage mishap: I was playing Roxie in a production of Chicago, at the Pioneer Theater Company. During the first preview, I was dramatically exiting stage right after telling off Billy Flynn, and I tripped over some floor lights. I went down like a tree in the forest and was kissing the ground before I knew what happened. I was so embarrassed — I picked myself up and hurried into my dressing room, only to have the stage manager run in and see if I was ok. I wanted to crawl under my chair! Needless to say, I had big bruises on my shins and elbows for the next few weeks.
Who have you played on "Law & Order"? Which edition? "Law & Order: Criminal Intent": I played an astronaut about to go on a mission to the moon, but was murdered by a jealous wife. The episode also involved another astronaut who was discovered with diapers in her trunk...sound familiar? I was pepper sprayed and then stabbed to death.
Worst costume ever: A G-string, bra, and knee-high pink leather boots...and that's it folks. I played a stripper in the Off-Broadway play, Burleigh Grimes, at New World Stages. Oh, and there was a stripper pole, too.
Cats or dogs? Dogs! I have an adorable pug named Guinivere, and she is quite a lady!
Favorite cereal: Honey Bunches of Oats
Who would play you in the movie? Hopefully I'd play myself! But if I wasn't available, Amy Adams.
Worst job you ever had: Performing in a Culligan Water Industrial in college. I was holding a small jug of Culligan Water in each hand dancing around a giant water dispenser, singing something about filtered water.
TV or commercial gig you most enjoyed: Working on "Law & Order" opposite Amy Ryan and Tate Donovan...and the rest of the incredible "L&O" cast.
Leading lady role you've been dying to play: Portia in The Merchant of Venice.
