DISNEY THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS

DISNEY THEATRICAL PRODUCTIONS was formed in 1994 and operates under the direction of Thomas Schumacher. The company's inaugural production, Beauty and the Beast, played its final Broadway performance in July 2007 after a record-breaking 13 years. In May 1997, the Walt Disney Company completed restoration of the historic New Amsterdam Theatre on 42nd Street, reopening with the world premiere concert of Alan Menken and Tim Rice's King David. Later that same year, Disney opened The Lion King, which received six 1998 Tony(r) Awards including Best Musical, as well as the 1998 GRAMMY Award(r) for Best Musical Show Album. Now celebrating its tenth anniversary on Broadway, The Lion King can also be seen onstage in London, Hamburg, Tokyo, Seoul, Paris and two touring companies throughout the U.S. In June 2007, a 10th anniversary celebration production of The Lion King opened in Johannesburg, South Africa, home of the cultural inspiration of the show. In June 1999, Disney premiered its first new musical outside the United States when Der Glöckner Von Notre Dame, an adaptation of the Disney film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, opened in Berlin. Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida opened on Broadway in March 2000 and received four 2000 Tony(r) Awards and the 2000 GRAMMY Award(r) for Best Musical Show Album. Aida ran on Broadway 2000-2004 and can currently be seen in Germany and Japan. On the Record, a new musical celebrating Disney's catalogue of beloved songs, launched a U.S. national tour in November 2004, visiting 24 cities. Tarzan(r), featuring the music of Phil Collins and based on the Disney film, played its Broadway engagement 2006-2007 and continues a hit run in Holland with future productions expected in Germany and Asia. Mary Poppins, a co-production by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, opened in London in December 2004; the Broadway production of Mary Poppins opened in November 2006 and continues to delight audiences at the New Amsterdam Theatre. This summer, DTP kicked off the touring stage version of Disney's High School Musical, which is scheduled to reach 60 U.S. cities through 2008. Future DTP projects in development include The Man in the Ceiling, featuring original book author Jules Feiffer and composer Andrew Lippa, and, through a developmental program with the renowned Williamstown Theatre Festival, a stage adaptation of Peter and the Starcatchers, a novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. In addition to producing musicals, in 2004 DTP established a relationship with Music Theatre International, which licenses stage performance rights to over a dozen Disney musicals to schools, community groups and professional theatres around the world.
