DIXIE CARTER
last on Broadway as Maria Callas in Terrence McNally’s Master Class, starred subsequently as Mrs. Arbuthnot in A Woman of No Importance by Oscar Wilde at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington D.C., and last year drew critical praise as novelist Jacqueline Susann in Paper Doll at the Long Wharf Theatre. Ms. Carter’s stage career began in musical comedy while she was still in college. She debuted in New York with the New York Shakespeare Festival, as Perdita in A Winter’s Tale. NY credits include Jesse and the Bandit Queen (Theatre World Award), Fathers and Sons Taken in Marriage, A Coupla White Chicks Sitting Around Talking (NYSF), and Pal Joey and Sextet on Broadway. Starring musical roles include Mame; A Little Night Music; Kiss Me, Kate; Pal Joey (Vera); Man of La Mancha; Brigadoon; Oklahoma!; Carousel; and The Student Prince. Known internationally as Julia Sugarbaker in the CBS series “Designing Women,” Ms. Carter has starred in seven other series, most recently “Family Law” (CBS). Her book, Trying to Get to Heaven, published by Simon and Schuster (1996), was re-released in soft cover in 1997. Ms. Carter lives in Los Angeles with husband Hal Holbrook.
