JAMES RADO was born in Venice Beach, California, raised in Rochester, NY, and Washington, DC. He studied acting with Paula and Lee Strasberg and appeared on Broadway as Richard the Lionhearted in The Lion in Winter starring Robert Preston, Rosemary Harris and Christopher Walken. With Gerome Ragni he created Hair, co-authoring the book and lyrics, the latter of which were set to music by Galt MacDermot. (James played Claude on Broadway and in Los Angeles). Featured in Agnes Varda’s film Lions Love with Gerome and Viva, Andy Warhol’s superstar. He wrote the music and lyrics of the Off-Broadway Rainbow (1972), co-authoring the book with brother Ted Rado. In 1974, he teamed up once more with Gerome Ragni to write the comedic/Orwellian show Sun: Audio Movie (music by Steve Margoshes). Directed American actors in European bus-and-truck tours of Hair during the late ’90s. New work: music and lyrics of American Soldier: The White Haunted House, and the book co-authored with his brother, Ted Rado. Much love and gratitude to the Tribe and the extended Tribe.
