With the 2011-12 Broadway season coming to a close next month (April 26 is the cut-off date for eligibility for the 66th Annual Tony Awards), Playbill.com offers a two-part look at the current season. First up are the musicals.
From the much-in-the-news Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark to Leap of Faith, which will open on the last day of eligibility, here is an overview of the 14 musicals that have opened or will open in time for the 2012 Tonys, which will take place June 10 at the Beacon Theatre.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
