Academy Award, Golden Globe and Tony Award-winning actor Denzel Washington, who will star in the new Broadway production of A Raisin In The Sun, will celebrate his birthday Dec. 28. Playbill.com takes a look at his stage career. Included are some rare shots for the occasion. Happy birthday, Denzel.
Washington, who won the 2010 Tony Award for his performance in Fences, is primarily known for his various film roles.
Denzel is a two-time Academy Award winner, first for his work in the 1989 film Glory; and second for 2001’s Training Day. Other films include A Soldier’s Story; Cry Freedom; Malcolm X; Philadelphia; The Hurricane; and Flight.
Washington first appeared in the New York Shakespeare Festival production of Coriolanus. Other stage credits include Ceremonies in Dark Old Men; When The Chickens Come Home To Roost; A Soldier’s Play; Every Goodbye Ain’t Gone; and Richard III. Broadway roles include Checkmates; Julius Caesar; and Fences.
Denzel is also known for his television work on the long-running hospital drama St. Elsewhere.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
