PHOTO SPECIAL: Playbill Dreams Up 10 Stephen Sondheim-Andrew Lloyd Webber Collaborations
22 Mar 2014
Composers and musical theatre legends Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber share a wealth of common ground: Both have written long-running Broadway sensations, taken home multiple Tony Awards and even share the same birthday. We imagine the collaborations that might have been. Happy birthday, gents!

Sondheim, who won Original Score Tony Awards for his work on Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and Passion— not to mention a Tony for Lifetime Acheivement in 2008 — was recently represented on Broadway with the critically acclaimed revival of Follies. His Tony-winning Into the Woods was also seen last summer in a Shakespeare in the Park production at the Delacorte Theater.
Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
