PLAYBILL PICKS: A Dozen Actresses We'd Like to See Play Fanny Brice in a Broadway Revival of Funny Girl
18 Jul 2013
We were just as disappointed as any theatre fan when the Broadway-aimed revival of Funny Girl was canceled in November 2011 prior to its January 2012 debut at the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre.
That production, which was due to play the Imperial Theatre, would have marked the first Broadway revival of the 1964 musical, which starred a young Barbra Streisand in the role of Fanny Brice. We're still hopeful that Broadway audiences will someday get the chance to once again enjoy the Jule Styne-Bob Merrill-Isobel Lennart musical, so we decided to suggest a few actresses we thought could take on the musical's title role.

Holed up in a seedy motel on the edge of the Mojave Desert, two former lovers unpack the deep secrets and dark desires of their tangled relationship, passionately tearing each other apart. Led by director Daniel Aukin (Back Back Back at MTC, 4,000 Miles), Tony winner Nina Arianda (Venus in Fur at MTC, Born Yesterday) and Sam Rockwell (A Behanding in Spokane, The Way Way Back) bring an explosive intensity to Sam Shepard’s (Buried Child, True West) landmark myth of the new Wild West.
