"The first time I saw Rent on Broadway was with the first replacement cast, which included Norbert Leo Butz – in what I believe was actually his Broadway debut – as Roger. The show in itself is a work of art and will always be considered one of 'the greats' in my book, but I was particularly taken with Norbert’s performance in that role. I remember reading his bio at intermission and being surprised to find that he wasn’t just an awesome rocker, but he’d trained at Alabama Shakespeare festival. That was something that really stuck out in my mind, and actually encouraged me to follow the route of Conservatory training. Not to mention I later went on to play Roger on tour, and it was Norbert who really inspired me to approach the role in a more ‘subtle, yet strong’ way."
