How Do You Recreate the Iconic Fashion of Friends For a Parody Musical?
"From the beginning our main goals were to make the show funny, obviously, but also to give it heart. In designing the costumes we were looking for opportunities to heighten the fashion to add to the parody. To ground the characters and create a stronger emotional connection to the audience, I created two “iconic” looks for each character."
"In Act 1, we see them in the 1990’s, when they are in their twenties and fumbling through life. For Act 2, I dressed the characters in more mature looks—as we saw them towards the end of the television show’s run in the early 2000’s. Here, they are in their thirties and (theoretically) have their lives much more together."
Chandler: "The actor also appears as other characters in the show seven times, in addition to Chandler’s Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl and awesome 80’s flashback costumes. "
"The actor has so many quick changes that the trick became designing everything so it could all work together and allow that track to be successful."
Joey: "In the television show, Joey’s style goes through a transformation. When we see him in the early episodes he is the sexy, smooth talking “Guido” from Brooklyn in denim and leather."
"As the show progresses, Joey is still all of those things, but his style becomes more casual and he looks like a poster boy for clothing brand STRUCTURE (none of the cast knew what STRUCTURE was). It was important for us to show that arc."
"We knew Ross’ leather pants was an opportunity to add to the parody. Since the cast is already living in this insanely heightened world, just copying the pants from the show was not going to cut it. Adding buckles and grommets and making the look more “rocker”-like helps a funny moment become a hysterical one."

"Phoebe was the most fun to shop for. She is a free spirit with wonderful Bohemian style."
"At the fitting there were piles of clothes to choose from. I am so grateful that we had such a wonderful actor (Kate) to help sift through it all."
