The Show Must Go On! Follow Nick Cearley’s Race to Make Their Show in Nantucket
Day one of tech happens to fall on the day before Labor Day where The Skivvies have a gig in Nantucket, MA. So after tech, we have our sitzprobe with the band for the first time. Then I leave directly from there to make an overnight flight. Let the adventures begin.
A picture of our amazing band and cast during the sitzprobe for Little Shop.
A candid shot of the sitzprobe. Johari Nandi Mackey who plays Chiffon gives you her best accidental stank face.
I CHOSE THIS LIFE. Catching a quick 30 minute nap before the 12 hour travel evening.
Minutes after taking this picture, I realize I am on the wrong plane. In Portland, they board puddle jumpers three flights at a time through the same gate. WHO KNEW? I simply boarded the first plane I saw. I hear the flight attendant announce on the speaker that we are on a plane heading to Redmond. I think, huh. We must be making a stop first on the way to Seattle where my connection is. NOPE. ON THE WRONG PLANE YOU GUYS.
To get to Nantucket, you have to take a very teeny tiny itty bitty plane that only seats 6 people and a pilot. I have seen these planes in movies and I am pretty sure it never ends well for whoever has to fly on them (IE Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline, Michael Caine in Jaws 4). My travel anxiety is through the roof.
Yes, you have to go through this teeny tiny door to get onto this teeny tiny plane.
This guy calls himself the pilot. He informs me that you don’t have to turn your phone on airplane mode in the sky. He also might be 18 years old and said I could sit in the passenger seat if I wanted. At this point, I have convinced myself this is my last day on earth.
This is what my alarm clock situation looks like for the return from Nantucket to Portland to make it back to day 2 of tech. Have I mentioned I truly thought this whole affair would be impossible .
The show was a success. It was completely sold out. We performed on the set of their current production of November. I may not have slept more than an hour or so but we had a blast.
