Story Pirates is a media organization that celebrates the words and ideas of young people. It produces one of the top podcasts for families, a live national tour, a series of critically acclaimed books, and education programs in schools in New York and Los Angeles. Story Pirates Changemakers, the non-profit arm of Story Pirates, is dedicated to providing affordable performance in NYC, and arts education programming for children in Title I schools and children and families facing homelessness and the foster care system.

Story Pirates is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented individual to oversee basic bookkeeping, to process bi-weekly payroll, and to manage other administrative accounts.

Story Pirates Changemakers is a nationally respected education and media organization. Dually based in New York and Los Angeles, we offer high-quality creative writing workshops and then turn kids' original stories into wild sketch comedy musicals featuring professional actors to show young authors the power of their words and ideas. We believe that there is a powerful link between literacy and confident self-expression, so we haven’t stopped expanding since the day we started providing programming at a single Harlem elementary school in 2004. Our media is now enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of fans all over the world.

Bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years of experience in arts administration or bookkeeping

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with a variety of stakeholders to achieve agreed goals

  • Professional writing skills

  • IT literate with knowledge of Google Drive and Quickbooks Online

Job Responsibilities 

The administrative associate does basic bookkeeping, payroll and accounts management for the organization, including: 

  • Manage day-to-day bookkeeping in Quickbooks, including categorizing payments/deposits, bank reconciliations, and journal entries

  • Process bi-weekly payroll in ADP, contractor payments, and new employee paperwork

  • Pay invoices as needed

  • Create and send invoices as necessary

  • Assist accountants with tax return filing and annual financial audit

  • Manage spreadsheet of booked programs and track overdue payments and budgets for producers

  • Bank deposits

  • Manage insurance renewals/audits and assist with creation of Certificates of Insurance

  • Enter donations into donor database
