Under the leadership of Terrie and Bradley Bloom Artistic Director Diane Paulus, the American Repertory Theater aims to expand the boundaries of theater and engage thousands of theatergoers at more than 300 performances and events each season. The Marketing and Communications department is responsible for maintaining and building awareness of the institutional brand as well as crafting sales strategies that result in more than $5 million in annual earned revenue.

Reporting to the Senior Graphic Designer, the Digital Marketing and Design Apprentice is a core member of the team and a key stakeholder in supporting the graphic
and digital presence of the theater, contributing to the conceptualization and execution of both web- and print-based initiatives.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Design print and digital collateral, including the A.R.T. seasonal Guides and performance programs, direct mail pieces, display materials, and advertisements including print, digital, and social advertisements, and video content.
  • Design and assist in the execution of all email communications for the organization, utilizing WordFly email client.
  • Craft and monitor digital advertising through Google Ads, including supporting the creation of HTML5 digital advertisements and the overall advertising strategy.
  • Enrich and support the development of A.R.T. websites, including updating the public-facing media archive of press, articles, photos, videos, audio, and educational toolkits.
  • Maintain internal digital archive of various media, including video, photography, and press clippings on an ongoing basis.

The Digital Marketing and Design Apprentice interfaces with other departments within the organization, specifically the Artistic and Development teams, to align and facilitate organizational communications and graphic needs. This position supports and assists other members of the department and institution as needed, including participation at evening and weekend events.

At the end of the term, the Apprentice should be comfortable with digital-focused design strategy and execution, have experience interfacing with several digital platforms such as website's CMS, email marketing creation and deployment, and creating digital advertising content, as well as have a strong sense of advertising and digital marketing strategy overall. The Apprentice should also gain experience working with select print publications.

Basic Qualifications
Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:

Bachelor's degree or a minimum of two years equivalent professional experience.

Additional Qualifications
Proficiency in the most recent Adobe Creative Cloud (including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Animate, and Dreamweaver), web and content management systems (such as WordPress), HTML, Microsoft Office (including PowerPoint), and must be comfortable working in Apple operating systems. Experience with video-editing platforms, Google Analytics, Google Ads, HTML5, Facebook Ad Manager, and Tessitura is a plus. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, be highly organized, demonstrate strong initiative, and ability to collaborate in a fast-paced work setting.

To succeed, one should have an independent mind, sense of humor, creative ways of approaching challenging projects working with diverse interests and individuals, an attention to detail, and a passion for the arts. A successful candidate must also be able to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, receive feedback, and provide design solutions.

Additional Information
This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of renewal for one additional year. Apprentices may not remain in the position longer than 2 years. Apprentices will receive on the job training and participate in various educational opportunities. This position is eligible for Harvard benefits.
