CASTING BREAKDOWN

DR. VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN (age 48-55)  A man of science and reputation. A borderline genius, Victor feels his life and career were destroyed by the young, vengeful Mary Shelley. Victor's only escape is his addiction to laudanum. Victor is a charismatic man who is admired by many, but his arrogance and focused drive leave him liked by few. He is given to mood swings in  even the best of times - which these aren’t. Educated English accent.

CREATURE/ DR. JAMES LIND (Age 35-40)  The Creature is a re-animated body of a 35 year old man who was a physical laborer, therefore his physique is hard and strong, though not necessarily “pumped.” However, his mind is that of the learned, wise, celebrated doctor, Dr. James Lind. The dichotomy of his physical abilities and his mental abilities causes him great internal conflict, and the operation causes his great external pain. Educated English accent. Must be willing to shave head for this role, if necessary.

ELIZABETH REED (age 30-40) Head nurse at the London hospital, she is known as a strong, no-nonsense woman. Although she works in a field of science, she also holds strong to her belief in God. She has the ability to support her patients and manage a hospital. She has earned the respect, and ultimately love, of Dr. Frankenstein and becomes his fiancé. Educated English accent.

SHOW DESCRIPTION

Doctor Frankenstein by George Allison

What if Mary Shelley got it wrong...on purpose?

His life’s work laid to waste by Mary Shelley’s vindictive novel, Dr. Victor Frankenstein summons an audience of ghosts to an operating theatre to present his side of the story in a bid to salvage his name and reputation.

This new riff on the classic Frankenstein story is not an adaption. It's a new perspective, told by the real Dr. Frankenstein, whose career, life and legacy were destroyed by Mary Shelley's "tall tale." Her story has lived on, been spun into plays, movies, musicals - while his name has been smeared with the label of madness.

Driven to hide away in his London home by the relentless whispers after the publication of Mary Shelley’s book “Prometheus or the Fate of Frankenstein,” Victor is haunted by accusations both real and imagined. He hides away for eleven years, but dares to venture out when he hears that the story is debuting as a play that evening. Coming face to face with Shelley’s vindictive words, and the horrified reaction by the audience, he races back to the safety of his home. But the years of guilt and laudanum have taken their toll, and Victor fights to clear his name before slipping away forever.
