All your whiskey-soaked actor fantasies are about to come true, because the hit Off-Broadway juggernaut Drunk Shakespeare is looking for performers with that special combination of indestructible livers, a love of The Bard, and an insatiable hunger to play!
Each night, one actor downs six shots and then attempts a Shakespeare play. Seriously. Inhibitions are released, the muse is invoked, and the spirits flow freely. Where else can you share the stage with Bernie Sanders, the Swedish Chef, a sexually charged doorman, and Bill Pullman, all while performing some of the most beautiful language ever written and singing the theme song from GHOST?! Pop culture, current events, the whole canon of plays, music, drinks and more take over a hidden library on 8th Ave and 47th St in the heart of Times Square.
For FOUR YEARS, Drunk Shakespeare has been entertaining audiences from all over the world. Drunk Shakespeare is A New York Times Critics’ Pick and “the best thing to ever happen to the theater” according to Slate Magazine. Alumni from the cast of Drunk Shakespeare have gone on to perform on Broadway & the West End, in national equity tours and with Blue Man Group. We want actors who are excited about the opportunity to get involved with a long-running show by bringing fresh ideas, passion, and excitement. Actors have agency in this company to bring their own artistry and ideas to the roles and we’re specifically looking for individuals who are eager to push the envelope of traditional theatre experiences. Actors should be excited by the possibility of performing alongside a different audience each night; Drunk Shakespeare boasts a high level of audience interaction.
This performance opportunity allows for the exciting combination of drinking while performing, and we love to work with actors who bring their own personal flair and an anything-can-happen attitude!
Because of the intense nature of the show, and the immersive performance style, actors will be cast on an initial 4-week agreement. This will ensure a good fit between actors and production. If successful, actors may be invited to join the open-ended run.
We are seeking currently seeking actors to fill the following roles:
(FEMALE) Seeking commanding stage personalities to play Lady Macbeth. LadyM derives her power from manipulation and sex appeal, and she uses her advantages to play with both the audience and MacBeth. Her drive for success is matched only by her devotion to her husband, who she will do anything to help become King. Strong stage presence, comfortable with audience interaction, improv experience, and great Shakespeare text work are all necessary. Special skills can feature foreign languages, impressions, or physical stunts. This role will be required to get tipsy/drunk on stage approximately once a week.
(MALE) Seeking likeable stage personalities to play the titular character in Drunk Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Macbeth is charismatic and charming, and needs to earn the affection of the audience to get them invested on his journey into the text. Macbeth must play both the strong leader to his friends and subjects, and the introspective partner to powerful LadyM. Macbeth often ends up shirtless at the end of the play. Looking for individuals with significant Shakespeare experience, mastery of text is a must. Other special skills can feature physical stunts, workout/fitness challenges, foreign languages, dance or more (surprise us!). This role will be required to get tipsy/drunk on stage approximately once a week.
(FEMALE) Our protagonist; Macduff wins the support of the crowd by entering into the show with game-changing pace and drive. His/Her need for justice forces him to the center of the action. Strong command of Shakespeare text and compelling stage presence are a must! This role requires strong & natural musical ability - singing, guitar playing, and/or the ability to accompany yourself singing are a plus. Dancing/gymnastic ability is also a plus. Macduff often ends up shirtless at the end of the play. Good sense of humor, up for anything attitude required. Audience interaction within the confines of the story. Individuals with outstanding comic timing, commanding stage presence, and high level of energy are desired. This role will be required to get tipsy/drunk on stage approximately once a week.
The master of ceremonies. Responsible for welcoming and greeting the audience and setting the stage for the show. Think of every Oscars host from the last twenty years, and combine them into one big ball of drunk-wrangling energy. They are responsible for keeping the play on track and the audience in line. Requires a performer with a superb stage presence, excellent improvisation skills, and uncanny people skills for HEAVY audience interaction. Excellent impressions or impersonations would be ideal. Especially seeking performers with stand up comedy backgrounds and training. If there is a YouTube video of you putting a heckler in their place, we want you!
